Latham, NY – Russell Sage College hosted the Highlanders of Houghton College on Saturday afternoon in their 2021 Empire 8 opener. Houghton recorded a 7-2 win over the Gators and is 2-0 in the league and 2-2 overall. The loss puts RSC at 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the Empire 8.
RSC's rookie Maddie Cherry (Las Vegas, NV/Odyssey Charter) picked up a win at No. 1 singles, beating Houghton's junior Elisa Swanson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove), 6-1, 6-0. She is undefeated on the season at No. 1 singles as she is 3-0. At No. 2 doubles, RSC's senior Taylor Gillespie (Cobleskill, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) teamed with rookie Gwen Eichen (Moriah, NY/Moriah Central) for an 8-4 win over HC's senior Maddison Soth (Auburn, CA/Del Oro) and Chloe Esch (Clarence, NY/Clarence). The Gator win puts the pair at 1-1 together.
The Gators are back in action on September 19 traveling to Oswego State for a 1 p.m. road match with the Lakers on Sunday.
