Albany, NY—The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team hosted the Highlanders of Houghton College on Saturday afternoon at the Albany Academy Tennis Courts. For the Gators, the match was the first Empire 8 match of the season. Sage posted a 6-3 win over Houghton to improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Houghton drops to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Empire 8. With Saturday's victory, Sage has won four consecutive matches.
Houghton took first doubles on Saturday as senior Catie Moore (Prattsburg, NY/Prattsburg) and rookie Elise Swnason (Beamus Point, NY/Maple Grove) beat the Gator tandem of seniors Abbey Clobridge (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park) and Sadie Dunne (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), 8-7 (7-5).
Sage then took No. 2 and No. 3 doubles as senior Rebecca Jackson (Saugerties, NY/John A. Coleman) and sophomore Taylor Gillespie (Cobleskill, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) earned a tight win at No. 2 doubles winning, 8-5 over sophomore Erin Haley (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and junior Alicia Cline (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood). With their win at No. 2 doubles, Jackson and Gillespie are 6-0 together this fall.
At third doubles, Sage's senior Alison Trudo (Plattsburgh, NY/Beekmantown) teamed with junior Molly Cochrane (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeysman) earned the 8-0 win over sophomore Tessa Brown (Cortland, NY/Homer) and sophomore Maddison Soth (Auburn, CA/Del Oro) and improve to 6-1 this season.
Clobridge posted a win at No. 1 singles, while the Sage No. 3 singles player, Dunne added a win three sets for her fifth win in six matches played. Sophomore Kaitlin Banks (Annapolis, MD/Mt. Anthony Union) added an exciting win at No. 5 singles for the Gators, while Haley and Cline earned wins for the Highlanders at No. 2 and No. 4 singles.
Sage is back in action on September 22 travelling to Manhattanville College for a 1 p.m. non-conference match.
