Montague earns Gator of the Year for her play with Women's Tennis Team

Albany, NY—The Sage College's department of athletics gathered to recognize and honor the outstanding performances of the 2017-2018 year with the naming of the athletic award winners for the 15 varsity athletic teams. In addition to awarding the Gator Award, for the Most Outstanding Player, the department also named the 2017-2018 Female and Male Athletes of the Year as well as the Dean Sharon Robinson Senior Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, which is given to the senior student-athlete with the highest overall grade point average, as well as the Aggie Stillman Perseverance Award.

Sage also awarded the Gator of the Year to members of the varsity teams, often awarded to the team's most valuable player. Named the Gator of the Year in women's tennis was sophomore Sammantha Montague (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville).  

Head women's and men's tennis coach Tom Fashouer noted of Sammantha, "Sam is one of the most competitive student-athletes I have ever had the pleasure to coach." Fashouer continued, "She comes prepared to give 100% every time she steps on the court. She is a team leader, finishing with a 9-5 record in at No. 1 singles for our team."

Sage capped the 2017 season with a 10-4 record and just missed a spot in the 2017 Empire 8 Tournament after recording a 4-4 campaign.  The 10 wins on the season, tied the program's mark for the most wins in a season.  The 2008 teams set the record for most wins in a season after going 10-5 with a 7-2 record in the Skyline Conference. Montague added a 6-8 mark at No. 1 doubles, while producing a 4-4 record at No. 1 singles in conference play.
