Alfred, NY- The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team travelled to upstate New York and took on Alfred University on Sunday afternoon. The Gators collected a 7-2 win over Alfred, marking the very first Sage win in any sport as a member of the Empire 8 Conference. Sage improves to 3-1 overall and is now 1-1 in the league.
The Gators took second and third doubles behind the play of sophomore Abbey Clobridge (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park) and senior Shanessa Mendoza (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) No. 2 doubles and seniors Lindsey Tolman (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) and Shanice Mendoza (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) at third doubles.
Sage collected a win at No. 1 singles from sophomore Sammantha Montague (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) as she had a convincing 6-1, 6-4 win. Clobridge added a win at second singles while Shanessa Mendoza added a victory for Sage at third singles. Tolman and sophomore Rebecca Jackson (Saugerties, NY/John A. Coleman) added victories for the team at No. 4 and No. 5 singles to set the stage for the first win for the team in their new conference.
Next up for the Gators they will host Elmira College on September 16 in a 1 p.m. Empire 8 contest at Prospect Park.
