Rutland, VT--- The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team travelled to Green Mountain College for a non-conference match on Sunday. Played indoors, the Gators strolled to their third straight 9-0 win as they bested the Eagles and are now 3-2 on the year.
Sage opened up the match with rookies Sammantha Montague (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) Abbey Clobridge (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park) taking the top flight doubles pairing d against Jannelle O'Connell (Colrain, Mass.) and Claire Chapman (Litchfield, Conn.), 8-4. Paige Vlahos (Little Silver, N.J.) and Lauren Coye (Plainstow, N.H.) were defeated in second flight doubles by teammates junior Lindsey Tolman (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) and sophomore Emily Schultz (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park), 8-3, while Ruby Santiago (Worcester, Mass) and Mercedes Rideout (Chambersburg, Pa.) were blanked 8-0 in number three doubles to Sage's sophomore Gabby Vaisey (Chestertown, NY/North Warren) and junior Samantha Dibbell (Hunter, NY/Tannersville Central).
Montague earned another win in top flight action claiming a straight sets victory over O'Connell, 6-0, 6-0.
All but two of the remaining singles matches were taken by Sage, 6-0, 6-0, except in third and fourth flight singles. At the number three spot GMC's Chapman earned an opening 7-5 set victory but was edged out in three sets by junior Shanessa Mendoza (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield), losing the second 6-3 before an 11-9 pro set in the final set. At the fourth spot GMC's Coye managed to take a game from Clobridge, 6-1, 6-0. The Gators got a win in singles at the No. 2 singles as graduate performer Melissa Estremera (Millbrook, NY/Millbrook) as she earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Paige Vlahos at No. 2 singles. Junior Shanice Mendozza (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) added a win for the Gators at No. 5 singles.
Estremera, Shanice Mendoza and Montague lead the Gators on the fall with their impressive 4-1 record in singles play.
Sage is back in action on September 22 hosting the Trailblazers of MCLA on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Prospect Park.
