Albany, NY – The Sage College's women's tennis team hosted the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College (LI) on Saturday in a key Skyline Conference match. The Golden Eagles posted the 5-4 win to remain unbeaten in league action as they are now 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Skyline Conference. Sage falls to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the league.
For the Gators, Sage's senior co-captain Kirsten Ackerman (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) was a double winner as she posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, besting St. Joe's freshman Shannon Merker (Flanders, NY/McGann-Mercy). She teamed with sophomore Erin Duffy (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) to add an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, beating Merker and her partner, junior Kelley McGrath (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North).
Duffy was a winner at No. 2 singles, defeating McGrath, 3-6, 6-4, 10-3. Also a winner in singles action for the Gators was senior Katie Schultz (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park). On the year, Ackerman and Schultz lead Sage with their 7-1 singles records, while Duffy if 5-3.
With her two wins on Saturday, Ackerman is 68-12 on her Gator career. She is 37-4 in singles play at Sage. Duffy and Ackerman are a perfect 6-0 together this fall to lead the team in doubles play.
A busy week awaits Sage with two dual matches and play at the 2014 ITA Northeast Regionals at William Smith College (Geneva, NY) on September 27-29. Sage returns to action on September 24 hosting MCLA at 3:30 p.m. at Prospect Park and is back in action at Purchase on September 25.
