Troy, NY – The Sage College's women's tennis team hosted the Hawks of Hartwick College on Thursday evening at Prospect Park. Hartwick earned their first win of the season, besting Sage 6-3 on the night. Sage drops to 1-1 on the young season, while the Hawks are 1-0.
Sage's senior co-captain Kirsten Ackerman (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) and sophomore Erin Duffy (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) teamed at No. 1 doubles to open with an 8-3 win over junior Ruth Jones (Ossining, NY/Ossining) and senior Nicole Schepisi (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia). Hartwick took both second and third doubles heading into the singles play.
Ackerman won over Jones at first singles taking the first set 6-1 and leading 1-0 in the second before Jones was forced to retire with an injury. The singles' win puts Ackerman at 2-0 this fall and 32-3 on her Sage singles career, combined with her doubles play, she now owns a combined career record of 59-10. Ackerman is also a perfect 3-0 on her singles and doubles careers against Hartwick.
Senior Katie Schultz (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) add the only other win for the Gators in singles as she defeated senior Michaela Finnegan (Cumberland, ME/Greely), 6-2, 6-3. The victory puts Schultz at 2-0 in singles this year.
Sage returns to action on September 6 travelling to the College of Saint Rose for a 1 p.m. match.
