Ackerman falls in Quarterfinals of ITA Regionals

Geneva, NY--The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team was represented by two players at the 2013 ITA Northeast Regionals on the campus of William Smith College. On Sunday the team had just one player alive in the championship round as junior Kirsten Ackerman (Rensselear, NY/Guilderland) posted two wins on Saturday to advance to the round of 16.

On Sunday, Ackerman defeated the No. 6 seed, St. Lawrence University's Elkie Vandenbeemst in the round of 16, 6-3, 6-3. She advanced to the quarterfinals, becoming the first player in Sage women's tennis history to advance this far in the ITA Regionals.

In that round she faced fourth seeded Jessica Bourque from Stevens Institute of Technology, but fell 7-6 (4), 6-3. Ackerman went 3-1 for the tournament in singles and now stand at 11-2 in singles action this fall.

Senior Nicole Riley (Catskill, NY/Catskill) also competed in the singles draw, but fell 6-0, 6-2 to New York University's Madeline King to drop to the consolation bracket. In the consolation bracket, she lost 8-0 to RIT's Elizabeth McGrail.

Sage's tandem of Ackerman and Riley also competed in the doubles and went 1-1 for their efforts. Overall on the season, they are 10-1 together.

Sage's women's tennis team returns to action on September 30 hosting Union College in a non-conference match at 4 p.m. which will be held at Prospect Park.
