Troy, NY – The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team hosted the Golden Bears of Western New England University on Thursday afternoon at Prospect Park. The Gators posted a 5-4 win to improve to 6-3 overall, while WNEU falls to 3-7.

Sage's pair of junior Kirsten Ackerman (Rensselear, NY/Guilderland) and senior Nicole Riley (Catskill, NY/Catskill) triumphed 8-3 at No. 1 doubles as they beat freshmen Caleigh Curran (Hamden, CT/Sacred Heart) and Joeanna Glantz (Agawam, MA/Agawam). The Gators tandem improves to 9-0 this fall with one another.

Ackerman added a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, besting Curran, while Riley added a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Linda Mustafa (Chicopee, MA/Springfield Cathedral). 

Adding to the winning effort for the Gators was junior Lauren Bendall (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) as she triumphed 6-4, 6-4 over the Golden Bears' sophomore Kelly Byrnes (Berlin, CT/Berlin). The victory was sealed by the three-set win at No. 6 singles by rookie Shanessa Mendoza (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield), 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 beating freshman Corey St. Louis (Groton, CT/Robert E. Fitch).

Sage's top double tandem of Ackerman and Riley will be competing in the 2013 ITA Northeast Championships on the campus of William Smith College (Geneva, NY) Saturday-Monday, September 28-30. The pair will compete in the 64 player singles' draw as well as the 32 pair doubles bracket with hopes of advance to the ITA Nationals next month.
