Troy, NY – The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team hosted the Golden Knights of The College of Saint Rose in a match that started on Monday, but was finished on Tuesday afternoon. Sage led 4-3 on Monday before darkness fell and the match was completed on Tuesday and saw the Gators triumph, 6-3.
Minutes later the Gators took to the courts in a scheduled Skyline Conference match hosting the Panthers of Purchase College. Purchase tallied a 7-2 win. Sage stands at 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the Skyline Conference, while Purchase is now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the league. Saint Rose is now 0-1 on the young season.
Saint Rose held a 2-1 lead after doubles as they won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Sage's pair of junior Kirsten Ackerman (Rensselear, NY/Guilderland) and senior Nicole Riley (Catskill, NY/Catskill) triumphed 8-2 at No. 1 doubles as they beat sophomore captain Paige Southwick (Champlain, NY/Northeastern Clinton) and freshman Gabriella Pizzanelli (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow).
Ackerman, who the Skyline Conference Player of the Week, was a winner at No. 1 singles as well downing Southwick, 6-2, 6-1.
Pizzanelli posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Riley at No. 2 singles, while Sage's rookie Erin Duffy (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) and junior Lauren Bendall (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) provided the pair of wins in singles play on Tuesday to lift Sage past Saint Rose, 6-3 with their three-set tie breaker wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles.
Following the Saint Rose match, Sage faced the Panthers and dropped a 7-2 decision. The lone wins for the Gators came at No. 2 singles as Riley posted a win in the tie-breaker, over sophomore Juliette Ferraro (Northport, NY/Northport).
Purchase's freshman Angela Assal (Bronx, NY/HSMSE @CCNY) pulled off a win that numerous other opponents could not as she defeated Sage's Ackerman, 6-0, 6-4. The loss was the first dual match loss of her career for Ackerman as she had been 20-0 lifetime at Sage in dual match singles play and 21-1 overall. Assal snapped Ackerman's 14 match win streak that had dated back to the last week of September, 2012.
