RPI scores on PK for 2-1 double overtime win

Albany, NY - Junior midfielder Alexis Catrellon (Conroe, TX/Battlefield) scored with 8:28 remaining in the second overtime to lift Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to a 2-1 victory over The Sage Colleges on a non-league women's soccer game at the Albany College of Pharmacy Tuesday night. RPI is now 2-4 and the Gators are 4-2-1.

Freshman Michala Buzzy (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) made 12 saves for the Gators while junior Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) stopped five. RPI had a 21-12 shot advantage and the corners were 3-3.

Sage had a great opportunity in the 44th minute. Sophomore midfielder Lydia Malkiewicz (Marlboro, NY/Washingtonville) charged in left of the net but Lyons came out to tackle the ball and end the threat. RPI opened the scoring at 30:25. Freshman forward Whitney Wisnom (Hillsborough, CA/Design Tech.) was along the end line to the left of the RPI cage and fed freshman Meagan Huang (Mountain View, CA/Los Altos), who shot it in for her first of the year.

With 13:43 remaining a cross from senior midfielder Dominique Puglisi (Schenectady, NY/Scotia Glenville) from the left just missed an open freshman forward Hallie Klosterman (Modena, NY/Walkill) at the right post.

Sage tied it a 1-1 with just 2:29 left in the half. A corner by Klosterman went right into the middle and it was headed in by senior forward Joanne Marfone (Remsen, NY/Remsen). It was Marfone's fourth of the season and 19th of her career, tying her with Kate Curran '99 for 12th in Sage career goals. It also gave her 52 career points to move her into sole possession of 10th all-time at Sage in that category.

RPI had great scoring chances early in the second half. Wisnom got past the defenders but Buzzy came outside of the crease to smother that chance at 38:38. Just over five minutes later, senior midfielder/forward Emily Dunn (Seattle, WA/Ballard) had a similar play stopped by Buzzy.

With 26:52 left, Wisnom broke in alone midway in the Sage zone, and Buzzy came out to cut down the angle. But her drive was high over the right side of the net. Dunn took a deep pass from the corner right out in front well defended and got a shot off stopped by a diving Buzzy with 11:17 left. Then with just 11 seconds remaining in regulation, RPI junior midfielder/forward Emily Kaplan (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) got in alone and just missed a low shot, as it went just wide and by the left post.

The best chance came from Sage with 2:12 left in the first OT with a long mid shot stopped by Lyons. But   a foul on a Gator near the Sage net led to a penalty kick attempt with 8:28 left in the second overtime. Catrellon went middle and scored her first of the year to seal the victory.
