Marfone's goal lifts Gators past Spartans, 1-0

Albany, NY—The Sage Colleges' women's soccer team hosted Castleton University on Sunday afternoon in the team's 2018 home opener. The Gators posted the 1-0 win as senior Joleen Marfone (Remsen, NY/Remsen) scored the only goal of the match. With the win, Sage is now 2-0 on the year, while the Spartans drop to 1-1.

Sage's goal came on the perfect setup off a corner kick as rookie forward Hallie Klosterman (Modena, NY/Wallkill) fired the ball from the right side and Marfone was able to knock the ball into the upper left corner over the reach of sophomore keeper Loren Henderson's (Rutland, VT/Rutland) reach.

The goal was second on the season for Marfone as she now has 17 career goals, which ranks 15th all-time at Sage. With her goal Sunday, Marfone is also making her climb on the program's career point list as she is now in sole possession of the 12th spot with 48 points (17 goals and 14 assists).

Sage's rookie goalies Natalie Tidings (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) and Mickaela Buzzy (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) shared in the shutout win. Tidings added seven saves in the first half, while Buzzy added five in the second half for the afternoon.  Castleton's Henderson made five saves with one goal allowed.

Sage is back in action on September 5 travelling to Bard for an 8 p.m. non-conference match, while Castleton visits Westfield State on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt.
