Fichera saluted as Gator of the Year for Women's Soccer Team

Albany, NY—The Sage College's department of athletics gathered to recognize and honor the outstanding performances of the 2017-2018 year with the naming of the athletic award winners for the 15 varsity athletic teams. In addition to awarding the Gator Award, for the Most Outstanding Player, the department also named the 2017-2018 Female and Male Athletes of the Year as well as the Dean Sharon Robinson Senior Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, which is given to the senior student-athlete with the highest overall grade point average, as well as the Aggie Stillman Perseverance Award.

Sage also awarded the Gator of the Year to members of the varsity teams, often awarded to the team's most valuable player, the Gators of the Year status was bestowed to sophomore women's soccer player, Giovanna Fichera (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central).

Head Women's Soccer Coach Garrett Cobb commented on Fichera, "Giovanna represents everything we want in a player here at Sage." Cobb added, "She has a great understanding of the game and exemplifies class and determination.  The amount of work she puts in to better herself and this team does not go unnoticed and helps foster a strong team environment."

A 16 game-starter for the Gators in the fall, she added a pair of goals with an assist on the 2017 season. She helped the team with her play at the midfield and on defense. Sage transitioned to the Empire 8 conference this past fall and she helped the team to a 6-9-1 overall mark on the year. As a rookie, she played in all 18 games with 12 starts, and tallied four goals with two assists. She now has six career goals with three assists for 15 points in 34 games played.
