Villa's goal in OT lifts Gators past Utica, 2-1

Albany, NY- The Sage Colleges' women's soccer squad hosted Utica College in the team's 2017 home finale on Wednesday afternoon. Sage needed overtime, but triumphed 2-1 over Utica to extend the Gator win streak to two game. Sage is now 6-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the league, while Utica drops to 5-10-1 and 2-5 in the Empire 8.

Utica's junior midfielder Jenna Mazza (Frankford, NY/Sauquoit Valley) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead with her team-leading fourth goal at 2:41 mark. The Pioneers held the 1-0 lead until the 59:15 mark when the Gators tied the action. Junior Joleen Marfone (Remsen, NY/Remsen) was able to capitalize and put the ball in after a series of shots. The first shot hit the cross bar and then the second shot was saved but loose before she pushed in the tying goal.

Headed to overtime, Sage was able to score just 2:18 into the first overtime as sophomore Maegan Villa (Rock Tavern, NY/Washingtonville) scored on the pass from sophomore Giovanna Fichera (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) to give Sage the win.

Marfone now has 15 career goals and 44 career points is now in 13th place on the all-time point list at Sage.

Sage's junior goalie Emma Augustine (Wawarsing, NY/Ellenville) collected the win after making six saves. Utica's sophomore keeper Allison Wagner (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) picked up 16 saves in the loss.

Next up for the Gators, they will visit Hartwick College for a noon Empire 8 match on October 28 in the team's regular-season finale. Utica College is on the road on October 28 travelling to Alfred University for an Empire 8 match-up.
