Hats Off – Trimblett’s Three Goals Lift Gators Over Mt. St. Mary

ALBANY – Sophomore Samantha Trimblett (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) scored her first career hat trick Wednesday night in Sage's 3-2 win against Skyline Conference foe Mt. St. Mary.

Sage (5-4, 2-1 Skyline) came out hot in the first half with Trimblett scoring off a Cassidy Bruen (Baldwinsville, Ny/Baldwinsville) a minute into the game. The Gators kept the pressure up, and Shelby Sarraino (Watervliet, NY/Shaker) drew a foul just a few yards away from the Knight penalty box. Trimblett sent a shot to the top right corner that found the back of the net to put Sage up 2-0 in the 4th minute.

Mount Saint Mary (3-6, 2-1 Skyline) got off their first shot in the 7th minute from Bridgette McKeever, but Cassy Robataille (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) came up with the save in goal. After two straight corner kicks from the Knights, Ariannah Logan (Canajoharie, NY/Canajorarie) worked a give-and-go with Trimblett to get to the Mt. St. Mary byline, but the sophomore's cross hit the side of net out of bounds.

In the 29th minute, Savannah Mason (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) played a through ball from midfield to Joleen Marfone (Remsen, NY/Remsen). Marfone dribbled for about ten yards, and ripped a shot from the top center of the Knight box, but goalie Mary Riley made a back peddling, diving save to keep Marfone from adding the third Sage goal. Three minutes later, Jordyn Logan (Canajoharie, NY/Canajorarie) played a long, diagonal ball across the box where Ariannah Logan was making a run on the back post, but the sophomore just missed the cross.

The Gators continued their strength on offense, and Jordyn Logan played a long ball to the center of the Knight box in the 32nd minute, but Riley came off her line and beat Mason to the breakaway ball. Mt. St. Mary responded with shots from Destiny Ribadeneyra and Jessica Lanning before half, but neither shot was on frame.

Mt. St. Mary came out in the second half proving that the game wasn't over. The Knights put up two good shots from McKeever and Allison Jones along with crosses from Nicole Cavallo and Stephanie Surrusco that hit the side of the Sage net. In the 55th minute, Ribadeneyra hit a dangerous free kick, but it was high and to the right.

Three minutes later, Nicole Bauer (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) stopped Ribadeneyra from countering on a Sage giveaway. The Gators then built in transition, and Trimblett scored her third goal of the game to put the Gators up 3-0 off a low, hard hit cross from Taylor Lynch (Woodstock, NY/Saugerties).

After a shot McKeever was saved by Robataille, Mt. St. Mary's Theresa Stinson was all alone at the top of the Sage penalty box in the 67th minute after a Gator mistake, but Robataille came off her line and prevented a Knight breakaway. A minute later, Emily Scheuer got through the Gator defense, and Robataille once again came off her line to prevent a goal.

Sage countered in the 70th and 71st minutes with shots from Ariannah Logan and Sarraino, but both attempts were off frame.

In the 72nd minute, Jones played a long ball from midfield into the Gator box. After some miscommunication by the Gator defense, Jessica Lanning tapped the ball in for Mt. St. Mary's first goal of the game. A little over a minute later, the Knights were awarded a penalty kick. Robataille saved McKeever's shot to the bottom left, but McKeever came up with the rebound and made the score 3-2 in favor of Sage.

Sage brought a spark of offense shortly after the penalty when Ariannah Logan looked as though she was going to have a breakaway with the keeper, but Emma Costa broke up the opportunity on defense. Four minutes later, it looked like McKeever would tie up the game when she was found open in the center of the Sage penalty box, but defender Monica Koralus (Verbank, NY/Milbrook) broke up the play and cleared the ball.

The Knights outshot the Gators 7-1 over the last ten minutes, but Sage held on for the win.

Robataille (5-4) was credited with the win on a 12 save effort while Riley (3-6) picked up the loss on four saves. Mt. St. Mary's McKeever led the game with eight shots while the Gators were led by Trimblett with three shots.

Sage is currently tied with Mt. St. Mary for fifth in the Skyline with six points each. Topping the table with nine points are Farmingdale State (3-6-3, 3-0 Skyline), Mt. St. Vincent (5-4, 3-1 Skyline) St. Joseph's – Long Island (3-6, 3-1 Skyline) and Purchase (3-5, 3-1 Skyline).

The Gators continue at home Sat. Oct., 1 when they take on St. Joseph's – Brooklyn at the ACP Athletic Complex at 3 p.m.
