Sage Falls in Home Opener 4-1 to Plattsburgh State

ALBANY – Freshman Cassy Robataille (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) came up with 11 saves for the Gators, but Anissa Hartmann's hat trick pulled Plattsburgh State ahead for the 4-1 win Friday night in Sage's home opener.

Hartmann got off two early shots until Sage's Maegan Villa (Rock Tavern, NY/Washingtonville) took Sage's first shot in the 2nd minute. The Cardinals teed off another two shots until sophomore Joleen Marfone (Remsen, NY/Remsen) took Sage's second shot in the 9th minute. Three minutes later, senior Cassidy Bruen (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) got off a cross on the left side in Cardinal territory, but a Plattsburgh defender cleared the threat.

In the 19th minute, a foul was called on Plattsburgh 30 yards from their own net. Marfone shot the ball from range and struck the corner of the crossbar. After four minutes of back-and-forth action, Hartmann broke the stalemate in the 23rd minute on a penalty kick to the bottom right corner.

Three minutes later, Sage's Jordyn Logan (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie) tied the game 1-1 when the sophomore won a 1v1 with Plattsburgh's keeper. Sophomore Samantha Trimblett (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) was credited with her second assist of the season.  Less than one minute later, Hartmann put the Cardinals up 2-1 in the 27th minute off a Rachael Moran cross in the six yard box.

Sage got off two shots from senior Taylor Lynch (Woodstock, NY/Saugerties) and Trimblett in the 28th and 37th minutes respectively, but both attempts fell short. Plattsburgh had a key opportunity for an insure goal in the 38th minute when Kelsey Gage's header off Sarah Bonner's corner kick was blocked by the Sage defense.

In the 41st minute, Gage looked as though she was going to have a 1v1 with Robataille in goal, but a heads up play by senior Monica Koralus (Verbank, NY/Milbrook) prevented Gage's golden opportunity. Over the next Plattsburgh got off another two shots, but the score remained 2-1 going into halftime.

Four minutes into the second half, Hartmann completed her hat trick and gave Plattsburgh an insurance goal in off another Moran assist. After four Plattsburgh shots, Trimblett teed off a shot in the 67th minute, but Cardinals keeper Nichole Gibson came up with the save.

After 15 minutes of back-and-forth action, Plattsburgh's Sarah Haight scored a floating upper 90 shot from the top left corner of the penalty box to give the Cardinals their fourth and final goal.

Robataille (2-2) picked up the loss for the Gators with 11 saves while Gibson (3-0) was credited the win in goal with five saves.

Sage's next game is tomorrow Sat. Sept., 10 at the ACP Athletic Complex against Southern Vermont at 7 p.m.
