Gators post 4-2 win as Sage beats ACPHS in Battle of New Scotland Avenue

Albany, NY –The Sage women's soccer team opened the 2015 season on Tuesday evening facing the Panthers of Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in the Battle of New Scotland Avenue. Sage posted the 4-2 win on opening day to improve to 1-0, while the Panthers fall to 2-1.

Sage's senior tri-captain Nicole Maher (Glen Clove, NY/Saint Dominic) put the Gators on the scoreboard first with her score at 5:16 as she pushed in the shot on the top of the left of the penalty kick box and scored with her pass to the upper 90 to right corner.

Rookie Samantha Trimblett (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) gave Sage a 2-0 lead on a feed from rookie Rachel Pratt (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) at 30:16.

The Panthers scored at 39:21 as rookie Katie Benson (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) beat Sage's rookie keeper Emaleigh Maloney (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) in a one and one and broke up Sage's shutout bid. She would tie up the game at 71:32 on a feed from rookie Sydney Rule (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa).

Sage's returning leading goal scorer Savannah Mason (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) broke the tie up with her first goal of the season and her 16th career tally at she converted the feed from rookie midfielder Ariannah Logan (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie) at 72:19. The Gators pushed in an insurance goal at 89:36 as rookie Joleen Marfone (Remsen, NY/Remsen) capped the scoring for the night. Sage held a 17-15 edge on shots in the non-conference match.

Gator keeper Maloney made five saves in goal in earning the win, while ACPHS's sophomore Amy Jagareski (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) made three saves in the loss.

Maher is climbing Sage's career goal scoring list as she now has 29 career goals and stands No. 4 in the career goal list, while ranking No. 3 in career points with 29 goals and 14 assists.

ACP is back in action on September 6 hosting the Panther Invitational, while Sage travels to Potsdam State to compete in the Bears' Invitational and will face New England College (ME) on Saturday, September 5 at 4:30 p.m.
