Andrew Gamarra named Sage Women's Soccer Head Coach

Troy, NY – The Sage Colleges' department of athletics has announced the selection of Andrew Gamarra (Lexington, KY) as the head women's soccer coach.

Director of Athletics Dani Drews said of Andrew's selection, "Sage is indeed fortunate to have Andrew joining our staff." She continued, "He brings such a variety of talents to Sage ranging from outstanding soccer playing and coaching experience, leadership development and facility management.   We cannot wait for Andrew to arrive and for the 2014 season to begin."

Gamarra said of his hiring, "I'm very grateful to Dani Drews for the chance to lead the Sage Women's Soccer program; the team is poised to excel!" Gamarra added "It will be a thrill to contribute my soccer education and experience to the growth of the players.  I envision a team in which each individual player thrives, playing a part in the success of the team as a unit.  This success is characterized by actions on and off the field--excellence will be emphasized both athletically and academically."

Gamarra spent five seasons as an assistant men's soccer coach at Carthage College (Kenosha, WI). Gamarra attended Division II University of Wisconsin-Parkside and guided the team to the program's first NCAA appearance in 2006 after they finished the season as the Great Lakes Valley Conference runner-up. He added two game-winning goals as a member of the 2007 team that capped the season with an 11-7-1 record and a quarterfinalist showing in the league tournament. He transferred to Carthage in the fall of 2008 and played for the 2008 and 2009 Red Men before graduating in 2010 with a bachelor's in business administration. He later earned a master's in education degree from Carthage in 2013.

As a player at Carthage, he was a two year team captain, earning team MVP honors twice. While a student-athlete at Carthage, he was a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was selected to represent Carthage at the NCAA National Student Leadership Conference in Orlando.

In addition to his role as an assistant men's coach at Carthage, he also served as Carthage's Tarble Athletic and Recreation supervisor, managing a multi-million dollar, 156,000 square foot athletic facility.

As an assistant at Carthage, he helped the program to a combined 52-7-2 mark, while leading the 2010 squad to an NCAA tournament appearance. He possesses over five years of experience having coached the United FC Soccer Club (Kenosa, WI) and the Central High School Girls' Varsity Team (Salem, WI). He also holds his U.S.S.F. National "D" license and NSCAA National Diploma, which he earned in 2013. Last year, he attained his NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.

Gamarra added, "I want to thank Carthage for allowing me to be part of a great program and for fostering my growth as a coach.  I gained so much there that I cannot wait to offer at Sage.  Accordingly, I'm excited to learn from my new peers in such a successful and welcoming athletic department."

The 2014 Gators open the season on August 30 and August 31 competing at the SUNY-IT Tournament facing Hilbert College in the opening day contest at 4 p.m. The Gators' 2014 home opener is on September 3 at 5 p.m. when Sage faces Albany College of Pharmacy in a non-conference game to be held at ACP's Athletic Complex.
