Colfer records first career win as Gators triumph, 7-0

Colonie, NY---The Sage Colleges' women's soccer team hosted the Jays of NYU-Poly on Saturday afternoon in the Gators' Skyline Conference opener. Sage recorded a convincing 7-0 win to mark for the first career win for rookie head coach, Caitlin Colfer. The Gators stand at 1-5 overall and 1-0 in the Skyline Conference, while NYU-Poly drops to 1-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

The Gators held a 2-0 lead at the break as rookie midfielder Nicole Maher (Glen Cover, NY/Saint Dominic) scored the first of two goals on the afternoon. Maher scored her first goal on a feed from senior defender Rachel Wampler (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle Area) at 9:31. Rookie Sara Tironi (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge) gave the team a 2-0 lead with her first collegiate score to give the team a 2-0 lead with her first collegiate score at the 24:46 mark.

Sage broke open the match in the second half with a season-high five goals, including the first of the season from sophomore midfielder Emily Stevenson (Ithaca, NY/Newfield), sophomore defender Melissa Spring (Penfield, NY/Penfield), freshman Kelsey Woron (Baltimore, MD/Chesapeake), and junior Sarah Woodruff (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen Central).

By game's end, Maher had a pair in the contest and now has a team-leading five goals and an assist for 11 points. Wampler finished with a pair of assists as did sophomore midfielder Shelby Ruppenthal (Albany, NY/Guilderland).

Sage's sophomore keeper Teagan Waddingham (Coeymans Hollow, NY/Ravena Coeymans-Selkirk) recorded her first shutout of the season with one save on the afternoon. NYU-Poly's goalie Catherine Mistretta (Bellmore, NY/John F. Kennedy) made 14 saves in the loss.

Sage returns to action on Wednesday, September 26 when they travel to Maritime College for a 5 p.m. Skyline Conference contest.
