Albany, NY----The Sage Colleges women's soccer team opened the 2009 season on Wednesday hosting the Mustangs of SUNY Morrisville. Sage would tally a 6-0 win over Morrisville to improve to 1-0 overall, while Morrisville drops to 0-1.
Sophomore forward Rebecca Marszalek (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley) tallied a hat trick to lead the Gators, while junior back Amanda Potter (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) connected on a goal and an assist. On the day, the Gators outshot Morrisville 38-0. By game's end, she had seven points on the day. Junior midfielder Ashley Allain (Stillwater, NY/Stillwater) added three assists as well for the Gators. A year ago, Marszalek led the team with 31 points on 14 goals with three assists, while Allain was the team' second leading scorer with 11 points on three goals and five assists.
Sage's junior goalie Brittany McDonald (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) posted a shutout and was aided in the contest by a defense that posted the shutout after earning just seven blankings a year ago. Morrisville's freshman Cheyanna Waters (Woodhull, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) was kept busy in her collegiate debut, recording 14 saves on 38 shots faced with six goals allowed.
Sage posted a 7-8-3 overall record a year ago after also earning the program's first ECAC Tournament appearance. The Mustangs had been an NCAA provisional member last season and 0-18 in 2008. Sage returns to action on September 7 travelling to SUNY IT for a non-conference matchup at 1:00 p.m. The Mustangs will host the College of Maritime on September 6 at 1:00 p.m. in the team's home opener.
