Gators stymied in opener by SUNY-Poly

Albany, NY —The Sage Colleges' women's lacrosse team hosted the Wildcats of SUNY-Polytechnic on Wednesday afternoon in their 2020 opener. SUNY-Poly was led by the play of junior midfielder Emily Somes (Eldbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) as she had seven goals in the 21-10 win over Sage. The Wildcats are now 2-0, while Sage falls to 0-1 on the young season.

Poly led 9-6 at the half after Sage used a run late in the first half to pull within three goals, but could not get any closer in the final half of play.

Sage's rookie attacker Samantha Shafer (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) added four goals in her collegiate debut for the Gators. Newcomer Caroline Musinski (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) also collected three goals for Sage, while sophomore Paige Stewart (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) added two goals with two assists in the contest.

Junior attacker Kaley Pichura (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) added six goals and an assist, while rookie Jasmin Brown (Shirley, NY/Longwood) added four goals with two assists. Rookie Micheala Johnson (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherill) also had three goals with an assist to help the team to the road victory.

Sage used three goalie in the contest as junior Carly Plaisance (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) started and had 15 saves with 12 goals allowed in her 41 plus minutes of work. Also seeing time for Sage was junior Marina Azab (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and rookie Madeline Butta (Millbrook, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes).

Poly's junior keeper Alycia Lugo (Wappinger Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) collected the win as she made 12 saves in the contest and is now 2-0.

Sage returns to action on March 7 hosting Fitchburg State in a noon contest at ACP Stadium.
