Albany, NY-- The Sage Colleges' women's lacrosse team hosted the Kangaroos of SUNY-Canton on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference match-up. Canton earned the 16-3 win to improve to 5-5 on the year. With the loss, Sage drops to 1-6.
The Kangaroos led 8-1 at the half and were paced by the play sophomores MaryClare Bowes (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) and Jessica Pele (Estevan, SK) with three goals apiece. Bowes leads her team with 29 goals on the year with 33 points.
Sage's seniors Ellen Abbott (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) and Torri Sperl (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) scored for the Gators as Abbott added two goals and Sperl added one goal. Sperl now has a season-high 21 points on 18 goals, while Abbott has three goals. Sperl is fifth in both career goals and points as she has 61 points and 56 career goals. Abbott checks in at the No. 10 spot in both career points (29) and goals (24).
Sophomore Brittany Gage (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) tallied four draw controls with two caused turnovers with a pair of ground ball pickups. Gage now has 51 career draws to her credit and is now fifth on the Gator career list. Graduate performer Savannah Mason (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) racked up three draws with two caused turnovers and has now moved into the Top ten in draws with 32. Mason is now fourth in career ground ball scoops as she has 73 in her time with the Gators.
Sage's rookie goalie Carly Plaisance (Bennington, VT/Mount Union Anthony) made the start and recorded a personal best 14 saves with 13 goals allowed in 47:01 minutes of service. Junior Jenna Cislak (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) added time in goal for 12:59 with one save and three goals allowed.
Sage's women's lacrosse team held their Sexual Assault Awareness Game in conjunction with the contest, bringing awareness to relationship violence. The team wore teal t-shirts prior to the game and teal hair ribbons. Sage's Director of Title IX & EEO Compliance, Dishpaul S. Dhuga, J.D. was in attendance at the contests and provided assistance with any questions concerning the program. In his role at Sage, he is charged with making sure that the college is in compliance with Title IX and NYS Enough is Enough laws, conducts investigations, and provides training and awareness around campus about sexual assault prevention.
Next up for the Gators, they will host Empire 8 opponent Alfred University at 5 p.m. at ACP's Athletic Field. Sage will honor their Seniors on Saturday night following the contest in conjunction with Senior Night.
