Sage Women's Hoop Team Overcomes Huskies to take key win, 59-57

Plattsburgh, NY- The Sage College's women's basketball team opened competition at the Plattsburgh State University Cardinal Classic facing the Huskies of Southern Maine. After trailing 27-16 at the half, Sage rallied for a strong fourth quarter and tallied a 59-57 win to improve to 1-1 on the year.

Sage played a tough fourth quarter as they overcame the Huskies and tied the game at 43-43 with 8:28 left as sophomore Kaitlyn Bowman (Dannemora, NY/Saranac) hit a jumper and followed that play with a key three-pointer at 6:55 to give Sage a 46-43 lead as the Gators never looked back and did not relinquish the lead.

Bowman finished with 13 points, while sophomore guard Macie Holmes (Amsterdam, NY/Mekeel Christian Academy) led the team with her 15 points and was clutch down the stretch hitting 7-9 from the free throw line. Joining her in double-digit scoring were senior guard Frankie Pearson (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) and junior forward Genevieve Schoff (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) as Pearson added 12 points and Schoff connected for 11 points.

Pearson tallied eight rebound with a 3-9 effort from three-point range, while Schoff added seven rebounds for the Gators. Pearson holds the program's career three-point mark and has 139 three's while continuing her climb with 784 career points moving ahead of Kelly Murphy (772, 1999-2002) to stand in ninth place. Schoff boasts 656 career points, while ranking 13th in rebounding with 407 after moving past Elizabeth Boland (405, 1983-1987) to rank 13th.

Sage will face the host Cardinals of Plattsburgh State on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the championship game.
