Albany, NY— The Sage College's women's basketball team hosted the Lady Bears of St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn on Wednesday night in a Skyline Conference contest. Sage remained unbeaten in the Skyline Conference play as they beat the Lady Bears, 71-53. Sage improves to 17-3 overall and 13-0 in the Skyline, while SJC-Brooklyn drops to 6-16 overall and 5-8 in the Skyline Conference.
Sage held a 40-29 lead at the half as junior guard Frankie Pearson (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) collected 13 points and had a 3-6 performance from three-point range. Sophomore forward Gen Schoff (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) added 10 points in the first half alone and hit 4-of-5 field goals from the floor to help the Gators shoot a red-hot 51.6% from the floor.
For the Lady Bears, senior guard Erica Eddy (Glendale, NY/Christ the King) has eight first-half points with a pair of three-pointers, while junior forward Kristen Candelaria (Jamaica, NY/Archbishop Molly) had five points and seven rebounds with a block in the first half of play.
Pearson finished with 21 points and made four three-pointers in the action, while adding six rebounds and six steals. Pearson continues her race to break the Sage career three-point record as she has 120 and is rapidly closing in the record held by Carly Vallee (126, 2009-2013). Schoff tallied 16 points after making 7-11 from the floor while hitting a pair of free throws as she continues to add to her mark for most free throws made in a single-season as she now has 101.
Rookie guard Macie Holmes (Amsterdam, NY/Mekeel Christian Academy) added 11 points and had 10 boards, while adding four steals, while rookie guard Kaitlyn Bowman (Dannemora, NY/Saranac) also finished with 13 points with seven rebounds.
Sophomore Destiny Marino (Middle Village, NY/Christ The King) poured in 16 points with an 8-10 effort from the line, while Candelaria finished with nine points and a team-best 13 rebounds with two blocks and a pair of assists.
Sage returns to action on February 6 hosting Skidmore College in a 1 p.m. non-conference contest in Kahl Gym. In conjunction with the home game on Saturday, Sage will sponsor a number of activities including Take A Kid the Game with free admission and prizes for the youngster in attendance at the games.
At halftime of the women's game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sage will recognize the women's and men's soccer teams for their outstanding seasons this past fall that included Skyline Conference Championships and an NCAA Tournament appearance for the men's team after their record-setting season. At halftime of the men's game, which follows on Saturday at 3 p.m., Sage will recognize the Gator student-athletes that were honored at the 2016 2016 NCAA Convention by the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) with an Honorable Mention Award in the 2014-2015 NADIIIAA/JOSTENS Community Service Awards. Sage was one the selected institutions and conferences that was being recognized for the impressive community service projects performed by its student-athletes during the 2014-15 academic year.
St. Joseph's College –Brooklyn will visit Yeshiva University in an 8:30 p.m. Skyline Conference contest on February 6.
