Tironi honored for excellence at Sage

Troy, NY –The Sage College's department of athletics gathered to recognize and honor the outstanding performances of the 2014-2015 year with the naming of the athletic award winners for the 15 varsity athletic teams. In addition to awarding the Gator Award, for the Most Outstanding Player, the department also named the 2014-2015 Female and Male Athletes of the Year as well as the Dean Sharon Robinson Senior Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, which is given to the senior student-athlete with the highest overall grade point average.

Senior women's basketball player, Sara Tironi (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge Central) was recognized for her accomplishments both as a member of the basketball team and for her outstanding accomplishments in the classroom. Tironi was named the recipient of the 2014-2015 Dean Sharon Robinson Senior Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, while also earning a spot on The Sage Colleges' Intercollegiate Athletic Honor Society, which recognized junior, senior, or graduate level student-athletes, that have maintained a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.3 or better and have participated as a member of a varsity team for at least two seasons.

Also named the winner of the Gator Award in women's basketball for the 2014-2015 campaign, Tironi was recognized for her outstanding leadership for the record-setting women's basketball team this past year.

Head women's basketball coach, Allison Coleman noted, "Sara is the definition of a Division III student-athlete." Coleman, continued, "She works as hard off the court as she does on the court.  Sara was the unsung hero of our team this season and set a great example of what a strong work ethic looks like.  She will be greatly missed next season, not just for her basketball skills, but for her leadership and ability to get the best out of herself and her teammates."

Tironi was named the recipient of the 2014-2015 Skyline Conference Sportsmanship Award in women's basketball and is a candidate for the 2014-2015 Skyline Conference Sporting Award for her accomplishments. A team captain for the women's team, she was a tremendous leader for this year's record-setting team that went 18-8, while garnering post-season berths to both the Skyline Conference Tournament as well as the Eastern College Athletic Conference Metro Division III Tournament. She was the Gators' second leading scorer this season with a 9.1 ppg average, while connecting for 6.5 rpg. She tallied 622 points and 425 rebounds in her three years as a Gator. She is No. 11 all-time in career rebounding and owns an impressive 46.6% career FG% (222-476), while shooting 75.5% on her career from the free throw line as well.

Academically, she has excelled adding a 3.967 grade-point-average as a double major in both childhood education and mathematics, while also collecting a minor in both Spanish and middle school extension. A member of the Sage Athletic Honor Society, she has also earned three selections to the Skyline Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, while earning six postings on Sage's Athletic Honor Roll as well as numerous Deans' List selections. A member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society, she is a Kellas Scholar at Sage and is the Vice President of the Math Club at Sage.
