Jefferson pens her name into Gator recond book as Sage tops Old Westbury, 60-54

Albany, NY –The Sage College's women's basketball team hosted the Panthers of SUNY-Old Westbury on Monday night in Kahl Gym in a Skyline Conference contest. After trailing at the half, Sage came from behind to post the 60-54 win and improves to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the league. SUNY-Old Westbury drops to 7-7 and 1-1 in the league.

Sage's senior tri-captain, forward Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) had three rebounds in the first half and became the program's No. 2 all-time rebounder with 636 as she started the contest tied with Susanne Booth (633, Susanne Booth, 1994-1998).  Jefferson had six points in the first half, and by game's end had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. She now has 645 career rebounds.

OW led 36-25 at the break as junior guard Olivia Ilardi (Bayside, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) led the Panthers with her 10 points. The Panthers jumped out to an 8-0 lead to open the game and by 14 points (25-11, 9:10) before Sage pulled back within six points twice (29-23, 3:58 and 31-25, 2:37) before a three-pointer by junior guard Raven Pentz (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill Senior) capped the team's lead at the break.

Sophomore guard Frankie Pearson (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) tied the game for the first time at 53-53 as she hit a three-pointer at 5:07 in the second half. Sage's junior forward Sara Tironi (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge Central) hit a pair of free throws at 2:56 to give the Gators their first lead of the game, 55-54. Jefferson made two free throws at 2:01 and Sage led 57-54. Tironi capped the Gator scoring making the second of a pair of free throw attempts at 0:57 and the Gators held on for a 60-54 win.

Sage's senior guard Megan Bowman (Dannemora, NY/Saranac) added 16 points, while rookie forward Genevieve Schoff (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) added 14 points and tied her career-high with nine rebounds. Tironi finished with 11 points.

For the Panthers, Pentz netted 23 points after making 10 of her 22 shots from the floor. Ilardi added 11 points, while Crystal Barnes (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Technical) added eight rebounds with seven points and two blocked shots.

The Gators are back in action on Thursday evening travelling to the College of Mt. St. Vincent for a 5:30 p.m. league contest. SUNY-Old Westbury is in action on Jan. 15 as well as they face Farmingdale State College on the road in a 6 p.m. Skyline Conference contest.
