Heartbreaking loss for the Gators as they fall on the road to WCSU, 51-47

 Danbury, CT – The Sage College's women's basketball team travelled to Western Connecticut State University for a non-conference contest with the Colonials. Despite a 26-19 halftime lead, Sage dropped the contest 51-47 to the Colonials. WCSU improves to 2-1, while Sage drops to 1-2 on the young season.

Sage's sophomore guard Frankie Pearson (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) scored a game-high 18 points for the Gators, while senior forward and team tri-captain, Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) added 13 rebounds and eight points, but it was not enough as the Colonials captured the contest.

The contest was tied at 43-43 with 2:13 left to play when the Kerri Stolle hit both free throws and gave her team a 44-43 lead. A jumper by junior forward Sara Tironi (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge Central) gave Sage a 45-44 lead at 2:00, but the Colonials made the most of their free throw shots and got a pair from Caroline Brasa at 0:38 to take a 48-45 lead. Jefferson cut the lead to one, 48-47 with her layup at 0:17, but WCSU was in the double bonus and Colleen Cosker was fouled and proceeded to hit a pair at 0:12 giving WCSU a 50-47 lead. Sage tried for a steal, but drew the foul and after Brasa made the first shot at 0:05, the Colonials held a 51-47 lead and held on for the comeback victory.

In the final five minutes of the contest, WCSU made 11 of 12 free throws and finished the night with a 76.0% free throw effort. Three players finished the action with 10 points as Alyssa Eannotti, Brasa and Stolle all netted 10 points. Stolle added eight rebound with two blocks in the action.

Sage's Jefferson led the Gators on the boards with 13 caroms, including eight defensive boards with two blocks.  

Senior Megan Bowman (Dannemora, NY/Saranac) finished the action with eight points, while handing out two assists with three steals. Bowman now has 749 career points and moved ahead of Kristen Marcinczyk (744, 1992-1995) with her efforts.

The Gators will host SUNY-Cobleskill on November 22 in the team's 2014-2015 home opener in Kahl Gym at 2 p.m.
