New York, NY – The Sage College's women's basketball team was picked to finish in third in the race for the 2014-2015 Skyline Conference women's championship. Farmingdale State has been selected to capture the 2014-15 Skyline women's basketball title in voting conducted by the league's seven head coaches.
The Rams earned four first-place votes and 33 overall points to edge The College of Mount Saint Vincent, which received 31 total points and garnered three first-place votes. FSC claimed the conference regular-season crown a year ago with a 13-1 mark and finished the 2013-14 campaign with a 16-9 overall record. A senior guard from Queens, NY, Camille Romero averaged 19.8 points and added 55 steals for the Rams, who are vying for their second NCAA appearance in three seasons.
The College of Mount Saint Vincent advanced to the finals of the 2014 Skyline Championship for the first time in program history and compiled an 18-10 overall ledger. The Dolphins will be anchored by senior center Kelly Fraser, who averaged 17.4 points, 13.1 rebounds and 3.6 blocked shots last season while earning 2014 Skyline Defensive Player of the Year distinction.
After capturing its first-ever Skyline Championship, Sage finished third in the voting with 25 overall points. The Gators welcome back the talented guard tandem of senior Megan Bowman (Dannemora, NY/Saranac) (12.7 ppg.) and sophomore Frankie Pearson (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) (9.0 ppg.). Bowman was tabbed the Most Outstanding Player of the 2014 Skyline Championship, while Pearson garnered Rookie of the Year honors. Also back for the Gators is senior center Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central), who owns the program's all-time blocks mark (124). Last season, Sage posted the best finish in school history with a 17-10 record and graduated just one senior from the record-setting season.
Purchase placed fourth in the preseason poll with 19 points, followed by Old Westbury (17), Mount Saint Mary (16) and St. Joseph's-L.I. (6). The semifinals of the four-team 2015 Skyline Women's Basketball Championship will be held on Thursday, Feb. 26, with the finals scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 28. The champion will receive the league's automatic berth to the 2015 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship.
The Gators will find new leadership at the helm of the program as Allison Coleman was tapped as the head women's basketball coach this summer. Coleman arrives at Sage after serving as the Assistant Women's Basketball Coach and Game Operations Supervisor for her alma mater, Eastern Connecticut State University for the last four seasons. An assistant coach for the Warriors' women's basketball program for four seasons, Coleman distinguished herself as a player at ECSU as well. The most accomplished player in Division III women's basketball history, Coleman was a four-time All-American as a player for Denise Bierly at ECSU. Sage opens the new season on November 15 and 16 competing at the Brockport State Tip-Off Tournament facing Nazareth College and Alfred University in the tournament. The Gators will host SUNY-Cobleskill on November 22 in the team's 2014-2015 home opener in Kahl Gym at 7 p.m.
