Big day by Martin helps to lift Sage to fifth straight win

Old Westbury, NY –The Sage College women's basketball team travelled to SUNY-Old Westbury for a Skyline Conference contest on the road. The Gators tallied an 87-80 win to improve to 8-4 overall and 4-0 in the Skyline Conference and extended the team's win streak to five games.  SUNY-Old Westbury drops to 4-11 overall and 2-2 in the league.

Sage's Chelsea Martin (Davenport, NY/Jefferson Central) paced the Gators with her season-high 17 points as she tallied four three-point baskets. Martin now has 643 career points with 466 career rebounds as she has continued her assault of Sage's career record book. She has 92 career three pointers in her 84 career games started. She ranks No. 5 in career three-pointers, No. 5 in career rebounds and No. 7 in games played having now played and started 84 career games at Sage.

Rookie guard Frankie Pearson (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) connected for 14 points, while junior Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) added 13 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Sara Tironi (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge Central) had a double-double with her 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Megan Bowman (Dannemora, NY/Saranac) added 12 points with four steals and three assists. Bowman now has 243 career assists which is No. 4 all-time on the Gator career list. She surpassed the 500 career point plateau with 504 points.

All told, Sage had five players finish in double-digit scoring as held a 41-34 lead at the found themselves tied five times during the action with the final tie at 75-75 at 2:38 before pulling away.  Lea McClain (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) and Martin spurred the run as Sage went on a 4-0 run on a McClain free throw and a Martin trey.

Sage returns to action on January 20 hosting Farmingdale State College in a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference matchup to be held in the Kahl Gym.
