Gators sweep opponents for the week and improve to 2-0 in Skyline win win over St. Joe's

Albany, NY –The Sage College women's basketball team hosted the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College (LI) on Saturday in Kahl Gym in a Skyline Conference contest. The host Gators tallied a 63-43 win to improve to (6-4 overall and 2-0 in the Skyline Conference, while St. Joe's drops to 0-10 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Sage held a 26-20 lead at the break despite the Golden Eagles fielding a team with only five eligible players, but turned up their play significantly in the second half as they outscored St. Joe's, 37-23.

Sage's sophomore Sara Tironi (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge Central) tallied 15 points as she hit 7-of-16 shots from the floor, while sophomore Samantha Carswell (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer) connected for a double-double as she had a personal best 13 points with 12 rebounds.  She hit 5-of-9 field goals and for the second time this week racked up 12 rebounds as the Gators opened Skyline Conference play, besting perennial Skyline Conference champions, Mt. St. Mary on Monday, 66-54.

Junior guard Megan Bowman (Dannemora, NY/Saranac) connected for seven points with five assists and a steal, elevating her career resume to 228 assists which ranks No. 5 all-time on the Gator career list.

Junior center Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) connected for seven points for the Gators with five rebounds, while senior forward Chelsea Martin (Davenport, NY/Jefferson Central) finished with three points and seven rebounds in making her 82 consecutive start as a Gator, which stand No. 8 all-time at Sage in career games played. She also connected for her 87th career three-pointer, which stand No. 5 all-time. She also has 462 career rebounds, which ranks No. 5 all-time in the Sage career record book.

St. Joseph's was led by the play of senior guard Christina Cohen (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) as she had a game-high 19 points with five three-point baskets and 7-for-14 shooting from the floor. Senior guard Laura Cohen (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) added a game-high 15 rebounds, while netting six points. Sophomore guard Katie McGarrell (Centereach, NY/Centereach) hauled down 13 rebounds with nine points.

Sage forced 20 turnovers, while combining for a 57-43 edge on the boards in the team's third win of the week.

Sage returns to action on January 15 hosting Purchase College in a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference contest in the Neff Center (Troy, NY), while St. Joseph's College (LI) is back in action on January 15 hosting SUNY-Old Westbury in a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
