Softball team falls in Empire 8 Tournament opener

Alfred, NY –Russell Sage College's softball team opened action on Thursday afternoon in the Empire 8 tournament. Second seeded St. John Fisher University posted the 9-1 win over the third seeded Gators. SJFU improves to 26-11, while RSC is now 20-17.

The Cardinals had a big first inning as they plated eight runs and had an 8-0 lead.

Graduate player Taylor Dicranian (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) suffered the loss after she allowed four earned runs off of 12 hits with two strikeouts. She drops to 10-9 this season in the circle. She did collect one of the Gators' hits, an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning. She continues to add to her resume as she now has 50 career doubles.  

Dicranian now has 144 career hits and ranks No. 8 all-time, while adding 80 RBI's, which is tenth best. In the circle, she now has 90 career appearances and continues to add to her active record. Her 419.1 innings of work stands first and has 34 career wins which is No. 2. Her 38 complete games checks in fourth, while her 93 career strikeouts is 14th.

RSC's centerfielder Arianna Papas (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) was 1-for-2 with a run scored and rookie third baseman Ciana Santana (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) was 1-2 for the Gators. Papas has a team-best 57 hits this year and has recorded a hit in all but three of her 37 games started in 2023.Her 153 career hits ranks sixth highest at RSC, while her 105 career runs scored ranks fourth.

RSC will be back in action on May 12 taking on the loser of today's match-up between #1 seeded Alfred University and #5 seeded Elmira College. First pitch on Friday for the Gators is slated for 12:30 p.m. as the tournament continues on the campus of Alfred University.
