Papas strikes for 4 home runs and Madore posts two wins as Gators sweep Houghton

Houghton, NY –Russell Sage College's softball squad travelled to Houghton University for an Empire 8 doubleheader with the Highlanders. RSC's graduate performer and outfielder Arianna Papas (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) had a career-day as she belted four homeruns, two in each game as she helped her team to two wins. RSC is now 18-14 overall and 9-3 in the Empire 8.

Game #1 RSC 9-6 Houghton

Papas had a home run in her first at bat in the first and added another in the fourth inning as she was 3-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored.

Junior Isabella Vano (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) connected for a double and 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a run scored to pace the offense.

In the circle for RSC, rookie Leah Madore (Williamsville, VT/Brattleboro Union) collected the win as she worked 6.1 innings, allowing one earned run with three strikeouts. She improves to 9-6 and got assistance from sophomore Emma Anderson (Tolland, CT/Tolland) closed out the game for the Gators.

Game #2 RSC 8-1 Houghton

Papas led the Gators as she drove in six runs in the night cap and was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and had a stolen base. Vano and senior Lauren Salmonese (Poughkeepsie, NY/Poughkeepsie) both had doubles for the Gators.

Madore worked the second game, picking up another win after a complete game as she scattered five hits with one earned run and five strikeouts. Now 10-6 this year, she has worked in a team-best 107 innings and has fanned 54 batters.  

Papas leads the Gators this season in several offensive categories as she now has 50 hits including 14 doubles, four triples and six homeruns. On her career, she has 146 career hits and is seventh in the Gator career record book, while having played in 91 games. Her 37 career doubles is sixth and she has also moved into the No. 2 for the most career triples with 11. She has also driven in 77 RBI's (No. 11), while scoring 102 runs (No. 6) and has been successful on 20-of-22 stolen base attempts and ranks 12th.

RSC returns to action on May 5 travelling to Alfred University for an Empire 8 doubleheader and May 6 at Medaille University to wrap the 2023 Empire 8 conference slate.
