Softball splits with MSMC

Newburgh, NY –Russell Sage College softball team finally returned to the field after a 20-day hiatus due to weather delays. The Gators faced Mt. St. Mary College in a non-conference play. The Knights took the first game 5-3, but the Gators took the nightcap, 6-2. RSC is now 6-6 on the year, while MSMC is now 5-9.

Game #1  MSMC 5-3 RSC

Graduate player Arianna Papas (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) belted a triple to drive in two run in the top of the sixth inning and spot the Gators to a 2-1 lead.

The Knights answered back with four runs in the bottom of the inning and took a 5-2 lead into the seventh. RSC tacked on a run in the top of the seventh but their late-game rally was cut short.

For the game, Papas added a triple with two RBI's, while senior infielder Katelyn Rice (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) was 1 for 2 at the plate with a run scored. Sophomore Madalyn Ring (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) scored a run and was 1 for 3 at the plate.

Graduate performer Taylor Dicranian (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) worked six innings in the circle but took the loss after allowing seven hits with one earned run and a pair of strikeouts. She drops to 2-4.

Game #2  RSC 6-2 MSMC

The Gators had a big fourth inning scoring six runs to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Papas flew out to centerfield driving in sophomore Emma Anderson (Tolland, CT/Tolland) to start the scoring. Dicranian doubled down the left field line driving in rookie Ciana Santana (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow). Rookie Emma Heartquist (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane) singled down the right side to score Dicranian and Isabella Vano (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) giving RSC a 5-0 lead. Amber Banas (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to score Rice.

MSMC collected two runs on the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Gators shut them down as Leah Madore (Williamsville, VT/Brattleboro Union) worked seven innings in taking the win as she is now 4-2. She allowed just two runs off of four hits and fanned four.

RSC returns to action on March 31 for a doubleheader at Skidmore College, commencing as 2 p.m.
