Softball team takes two on final day of Florida trip

Leesburg, Florida–Sage's softball team wrapped up play on Thursday on their 2020 spring training trip in Florida. Sage posted a 7-1 win over St. Scholastica and then beat Penn State-Hazelton, 10-2. Sage is now 7-5 on the year.

The Gators tallied 11 hits in the game with a pair of doubles from rookie Katelyn Rice (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) and senior Kristin Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville). Silk drove in a run and scored a pair, while senior captain Alicia Swavely (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) drove in two runs and was 2 for 4 at the plate.  Junior Emily Agate (Franklin Square, NY/H. Frank Carey) was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored and junior Ashley Pulcher (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane) was 2-4 with two RBI's as well.

Swavely, this week's Empire 8 Pitcher of the Week, earned a complete game victory after allowing just one run off six hits and adding seven strikeouts. She stands at 3-1 this year. Her lone run allowed was a solo homerun by sophomore pitcher Olivia Howe in the bottom of the sixth to break up her shutout bid. Howe took the loss (2-3) after allowing seven earned runs off 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Game # 2   Sage 10-2 Penn State-Hazelton (5 innings)

Junior pitcher Katerina Lagace (Newington, CT/Newington) picked up a complete game victory as she worked five innings and scattered four hits. She allowed just two earned runs and walked a pair, while also fanning another pair. She is 3-4 on the year. At the plate, she also was 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI.

Silk and Agate both homered in the game as Silk was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, while Agate was 2 for 4 with two runs scored with an RBI. Rice was 2 for 3 with two RBI's, a double and three runs scored in the contest.  ame in the game working 2.1 innings and earned the win in relief with no runs off one hit with a strikeout as she improves to 2-3 in the circle.

On the season thus far, Lagace leads Sage with her .438 batting average and has driven in 5 runs. Rice has a .381 average with a team-best 16 hits and has three doubles and a home run. Sophomore Taylor Dicranian (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) leads Sage with her four doubles and has 12 hits to go with her .364 batting average.

Swavely checks in with a 1.62 ERA in 26.0 innings of work and has fanned 18 batters, while Lagace has fanned 19 batters in 31.0 innings and has a 2.48 ERA in 8 appearances.

As a result of the impact from COVID-19, The Sage College Colleges will extend its Spring Break by one week and transition all coursework to distance learning on Monday March 23, 2020 through Friday April 3, 2020. Any online courses that are already being delivered will continue as normal. We will reevaluate and inform the community of our plans for April 4, 2020 and beyond. Due to this change, all Sage athletic events during that time period are also postponed.
