Gators come close with Stevens on Saturday

Weehawken, NJ— Sage's softball team travelled to the New Jersey to take on Stevens Institute of Technology in an Empire 8 pair of games. Stevens took the first game 4-3 and then picked up a one-hit shutout win in the nightcap. Stevens is now 17-13 overall and 9-1 in the league, while Sage is 11-23 overall and went 3-11 in the league this season.

Game #1  Stevens 4-3 Sage

Sage jumped out to a 2-0 lead as senior Kiersten Duncan (Millerton, NY/Taconic Hills) belted her team and Empire 8 leading 15th double of the season to drive in junior Amanda Kiriakos (Yonkers, NY/Saunders Trade & Technical) who led off the inning with a single to short. Sophomore Emily Agate (Franklin Square, NY/H. Frank Carey) had an RBI to drive in senior Lindsey Decker (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) who singled to center.

Stevens plated a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Gators' lead to one.

Junior Alicia Swavely (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) doubled to right field to lead off in the top of the fifth inning and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by graduate player Lisa Kentris (Latham, NY/Shaker) to center field. Stevens added a run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score Sage 3-2 through five innings.

Stevens tied the action in the sixth inning as Katie Tirabassi homered to center field and took the game with an RBI from Meg Halloran to give the Ducks the 4-3 victory.

Swavely took the loss after 6.2 innings of work with three earned runs off seven hits with a pair of strikeouts as she drops to 5-3. Steven's Christine LacRochelle got the win as she allowed three earned runs off four hits with five strikeouts as she improved to 5-8.

Game #2 Stevens 2-0 Sage  

Steven's senior pitcher Marissa Cappella tossed a complete game shutout as she held Sage to one hit, while fanning 12 Gators. With the win, she improves to 10-3 this season.

Sophomore Katerina Lagace (Newington, CT/Newington) took the loss for Sage after allowing one earned run off 10 hits as she dropped to 5-11 this year.

Sage is back in action on April 24 hosting MCLA in a 3 p.m. an-conference doubleheader at Robison Field.
