Softball drops E8 DH to Utica

Troy, NY— Sage's softball team hosted the Pioneers of Utica College on Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 double header. Utica earned the sweep of the Gators as they took game one 5-4, and then earned a shutout of Sage with a 12-0 victory as junior pitcher Alyssa Samborin (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) threw a no hitter in the nightcap. Sage is now 10-18 overall and 3-7 in the league, while Utica improves to 10-14 overall and 3-5 in the league.

Game #1 Utica 5-4 Sage

Sage jumped out to a 1-0 lead as senior first baseman senior co-captain Kiersten Duncan (Millerton, NY/Taconic Hills) had an RBI double.

Utica took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead as junior Sadie Evans (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) had a fielder's choice and drove in two runs. In the top of the seventh Utica broke open the game collecting three runs including an RBI single by senior Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), an RBI single by Jacqueline Aronin (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck).

Sage had the chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh as senior Lindsey Decker (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) led off with a single before Duncan singled up the right side. Rookie Taylor Dicranian (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) singled to short to drive in pinch runner Mikayla Culnan (West Sand Lake, NY/Emma Willard School). With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Kristen Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) walked to drive in Duncan after rookie pitcher Jane Field (Waterford, NY/Catholic Central) entered the game allowing a walk before the starter returned. With one out, sophomore Ashley Madigan (Valley Falls, NY/Hoosick Valley) grounded out to second but drove in sophomore pitcher Katerina Lagace (Newington, CT/Newington) before Utica's pitcher Gabby Caccamo (Suffern, NY/Suffern) got the last batter to strike out and end the Gators' comeback rally.

Lagace suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs off nine hits with four strikeouts. She drops to 5-8. Utica's junior Gabby Caccamo (Suffern, NY/Suffern) earned the win after she worked 7.0 innings with five hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts and she improves to 5-5.

Game #2 Utica 12-0 Sage (5 Innings)

Utica's junior pitcher Alyssa Samborin (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) tossed a no –hitter and earned the win improving to 3-5. She improves to 3-5 this year. She got offensive support from Aronin, who added a two RBI homerun in the top of the fifth inning. Rookie Kaitlyn Paul (Albany, NY/Guilderland) added two doubles as the Pioneers had 15 hits including four extra-base hits.

Sage's rookie pitcher Taylor Dicranian (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) took the loss after 4.1 innings of work with seven earned runs off nine hit with a walk and a strikeout. She stands at 0-6.
