Softball opens Empire 8 play with twinbill at Alfred

Alfred, NY— The Alfred University softball team swept The Sage Colleges softball team Friday at Harrington Field in Empire 8 action by scores of 9-2 and 10-7. The Saxons are now 7-9 overall and 2-0 after opening league play while the Gators stand 5-11 and 0-2 after their league opening day. Jessica Wilcox improved to 4-3 as she allowed five hits and struck out six in five innings. 

Game #1 Alfred 9, Sage 2

In Game 1, the Saxons scored five times in the first inning. Tati Mejia was three for three and scored two runs while four players drove in two runs each. Kelly Staub and Alyssa Guitron had two hits each in the 12 hit attack. 

Sage sophomore infielder Emily Agate (Franklin Square, NY/H. Frank Carey) had two of the Gators hits. 

Ashley Lugo highlighted the first inning for Alfred with a two-run triple while Mejia and Delaney Kelly had RBI doubles and Kelley Staub singled home another run. Sage scored twice in the third with one of the runs coming in on an RBI single down the left field line by sophomore outfielder Lindsey Decker (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa). Staub drove in another run in the third for a 6-2 Alfred lead and scored three in the fourth highlighted by a tworun single by Allison O'Toole. 

Game #2 Alfred 10, Sage 7

Game two was a see-saw affair. The Gators scored three in the first and led 4-2 after two before the Saxons scored four times in the third for a 6-4 lead. Each team had two runs in the fourth and Alfred later had a 10-6 lead into the seventh. Becca Alexander had three hits and drove in four runs and Mejia and Staub each had two hits. Alfred had 12 hits in this game. Saxon reliever Moreta Dyke, the second of three pitchers, got the win with five innings and five hits and just one run allowed. 

Junior outfielder Amanda Kiriakos (Yonkers, NY/Saunders Trade & Technical) had three of the Gators 11 hits. Decker drove in three runs and had two hits for the visitors.

Sage continues an Empire 8 road weekend with a Saturday, March 30 doubleheader at Houghton beginning at 1 p.m. Alffred hosts Utica tomorrow with a pari of games beginning at 12 p.m.
