Softball squad closes spring trip on a high note shutting out CMSV, 14-0

Clermont, FL— Sage's softball team was in action on Thursday in Florida on the final day of their 2019 Spring Training Trip. Sage fell 7-3 to Beloit College in the first game before closing the week with a 14-0 win over the College of Mt. St. Vincent. For the week, Sage went 3-7. 

Against Beloit College, Sage jumped out to a 2-0 lead but Beloit chipped away and took a 3-2 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.  

Senior outfielder Lindsey Decker (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI with double in the action. Junior Amanda Kiriakos (Yonkers, NY/Saunders Trade & Technical) had a triple and was 1-4 in the game as Sage combined for 7 hits.

Beloit had a big sixth inning as they broke open the game with three runs in the inning off four hits including a pair of RBI singles in the inning.

Sage rookie pitcher Victoria Alvord (Greenfield Center, NY/Saratoga Central Catholic) made the start going 3.0 innings for Sage with 2 earned runs off 5 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. In relief, freshman pitcher Taylor Dicranian (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) worked 2.1 innings with 4 earned runs off 6 hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts, but fell to (0-3) on the year. Sophomore pitcher Katerina Lagace (Newington, CT/Newington) worked 0.2 innings with a walk in closing the action for Sage.

Against the College of Mt. St. Vincent, Sage posted the 14-0 win over the Dolphins in five innings for the team's first shutout of the 2019 season. The Gators' attack featured 21 hits and three doubles.

Sage's graduate player and lead-off hitter, left fielder Lisa Kentris (Latham, NY/Shaker) had 2 RBIs with a 3-5 effort at the plate and she scored two runs for the Gators. Rookie catcher Sydney Benton (Gloversville, NY/Mayfield) was ¾ with 3 RBI's with a double. Sophomore Ashley Madigan (Valley Falls, NY/Hoosic Valley) was 3-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.

Junior pitcher Alicia Swavely (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) had the shutout win in the circle for Sage as she scattered 5 hits with 3 strikeouts and two walks as she is now 2-0 on the year.

Sage returns from Florida and will host Westfield State University on March 20 in the team's 2019 home opener at Robison Field at the Neff Center in Troy with a non-league doubleheader at 3 p.m.
