Myrtle Beach, SC – Sage's softball team wrapped up their 2018 spring training trip with a pair of games in the Fastpitch Dreams Tournament. Sage picked up a 7-6 win over Penn State Abington in the morning, but fell in the second game to Brevard College, 7-3. Sage is now 4-4 on the year.
Game # 1 Sage 7-6 Penn State Abington
Sage collected 12 hits in the contest and came from behind after trailing 5-1 as they went to the bottom half of the fifth inning. Sage tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth, before adding a pair in the bottom of the sixth and broke a 6-6 tie with a single run in the bottom of the seventh to collect the victory.
Senior shot stop Alexa Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) had a big day at the plate as she drove in four runs and was 2-4 with a double and a triple. Graduate player, Katy Rimawi (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) picked up a 3-4 effort as well with three doubles and an RBI, while rookie Cassidy Schaefer (Esperance, NY/Duanesburg) added a 2-3 effort with two runs scored.
In the circle, rookie Katerina Lagace (Newington, CT/Newington) scattered two hits in 4.1 innings of work before senior pitcher Amy Hart (St. Johnsville, NY/Little Falls) came in and collected the win in relief after 2.2 innings with one earned run off five hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Game # 2 Brevard 7-3 Sage
Against Brevard, Sage allowed seven runs off six hits, but committed three errors that helped Brevard as they took a 7-2 lead after scoring five runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Sophomore Brittany Brooks (North Bangor, NY/Salmon River Central), freshman Ali Visco (Amsterdam, NY/Broadalbin-Perth), and sophomore Amanda Kiriakos (Yonkers, NY/Saunders Trade & Technical) all went 1-3 with RBI's to lead Sage at the plate, while sophomore Destiny Wierzbicki (Albany, NY/Troy) had the only extra-base hit for the Gators with a double.
Hart suffered the loss with five earned runs off six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. She drops to 2-3.
After the first week of the 2018 season, several of Sage's team members are making their climb in the program's record book.
Alexa Silk has now played in 117 games (14th), while Rimawi has played in 125 games and is now tied for the No. 10 spot on the list. Silk has 397 career at-bats (5th), while Rimawi is sixth with 387 at bats. Silk is now tied for third in career hits with Melissa Roy (170), while Rimawi is 8th with 129 hits. Silk is also fifth with 35 career doubles, while junior Kiersten Duncan (Millerton, NY/Taconic Hills) is tied for seventh with 31 doubles, while Rimawi is sixth with 32 doubles. Silk now has eight career triples and is tied for fifth, while also ranking second now with her 123 career runs scored. Rimawi jumped into third with her 96 career RBI, while Silk is eighth with 77 RBI's but is looking to break the career stolen base mark as she has 59, just six behind the mark of 65 set by Kristen Beikierch.
Senior pitcher Amy Hart is also 14th with 34 appearances after joining the team last year, while ranking 10th with 23 complete games. Hart is also fourth already with 178 career strikeouts and ninth with 15 career wins in 181.1 innings of work.
The Gators will be in action next on March 21 when they host Westfield State University in a non-conference doubleheader at Robison Field (Troy, NY) at 3:30 p.m.
