Gators Sweep Purchase in Skyline Doubleheader

PURCHASE, NY – Sage picked up a pair of wins on Sunday at Purchase with scores of 2-1 and 4-0.

In the first game, the Panthers got off to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Samantha Alonzo scored on a Mary Adams double to left field. Sage (12-10, 7-1 Skyline) responded in the top of the fifth when Courtney Laughlin (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) scored on a Purchase (11-4, 4-4 Skyline) error.

In the top of the seventh, Sage scored the go-ahead run when Jenn Onwe (Tarrytown, NY/Sleepy Hollow) scored on a Katy Rimawi (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) single. Pitcher Katie Kovage (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) and the Gator defense retired the Panther side in the bottom of the seventh to hold on for the 2-1 win.

Sage was led on offense by Rimawi (1-4, RBI) and Kiersten Duncan (Millerton, NY/Taconic Hills) (2-3) and Adams (1-2, RBI) and Alonzo (1-3, run) led Purchase. Sage's Kovage (4-2) picked up the win with five strikeouts while Alonzo (5-2) was credited with the loss.

In game two, Morgan Dunn (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) got the Gators off to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when the third baseman hit Allison Ford (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) home on a single to centerfield.

In the bottom of the second, the Panthers put runners on second and third with two outs on the board, but Lindsay Brace (Moriah, NY/Moriah Central) struck out Nicole Fortuna to keep Purchase from tying the score.

Both teams went back and forth until Sage scored in the top of the fifth when Alexa Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) scored on a Jessica Adams (Nassau, NY/Columbia) single. The Gators extended their lead to 4-0 two at-bats later when Adams and Kovage scored on a Laughlin single to left field.

Purchase got Lisa Kentris in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth, but Brace struck out Kelly Hayes to keep the shutout going. The Panthers tried to rally in the sixth when Shannon Clancy reached third, but Furtuna grounded out to Adams at shortstop.

In the top of the seventh, Sage had Samantha Dibbell (Hunter, NY/Hunter-Tannersville Central) and Adams in scoring position with two outs on the board, but the Panthers got out the jam.

Sage was led on offense by Laughling (1-3, two RBI's), Adams (3-4, run, RBI) and Dunn (2-3, RBI) while Lisa Kentris (2-4) led the Panthers. Brace (6-4) was credited with the win on an eight strikeout effort while Fortuna (7-1) picked up her first loss of the season.

Sage is currently in second place in the Skyline. Mount Saint Mary currently leads the conference with a perfect 8-0 record.

The Gators come back to Robison Field on Wed., Mar. 13 as they take on MCLA in doubleheader action starting at 3:30 p.m.
