Gators post a split on final day in Florida

Clermont, Fl. – On their last day of their spring break trip in Florida, the Sage softball team split with Plattsburgh State with a 6-3 win and an 11-3 loss to RPI Saturday afternoon.

In the game with Plattsburgh, Sage went up 3-0 in the top of the second when Jenn Onwe (Tarrytown, NY/Sleepy Hollow), Courtney Laughlin (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) and Allison Ford (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicvile) crossed home on singles from Ford and Alexa Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville).

After giving up an unearned run in the bottom of the second, Sage plated Ford and Katy Rimawi (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) off a Kiersten Duncan (Millerton, NY/Taconic Hills) single to go up 5-1 in the top of the fourth.

The Cardinals responded with a two runs in the bottom of the fifth, a Jessica Adams (Nassau, NY/Columbia) run in the top of the seventh sealed the 6-3 win for the Gators.

In the nightcap with RPI, Sage faced a 6-0 deficit early in the game, until Silk crossed home off an Adams single in the bottom of the fourth to end Sage's run drought.

The Gators added a second run in the fifth inning when Laughlin scored on a Ford RBI to make the score 6-2.

RPI tacked on four runs in the sixth to put their lead at 10-2 going into the bottom of the inning. Sage brought Morgan Dunn (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) across the plate, but it wouldn't be enough as the Engineers would go on to win 11-3.

After the completion of their opening week, the Gators are now 3-7 going into conference play back up north. Sage opens Skyline play on Sat., Mar. 19 with a doubleheader on the road at Sarah Lawrence. Games are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
