Gators move into finals of 2014 Skyline Softball Tournament

Troy, NY – The Sage Colleges' softball team posted two wins to advance to the finals of the 2014 Skyline Conference Softball Tournament on Sunday morning. Sage will face three-time defending champion Farmingdale State College at 11 a.m. in the finals of the tournament.

After dropping the first game of the tournament, the Gators posted a 3-1 win over No. 2 seeded Mt. St. Mary College in eight innings and then beat the College of Mt. St. Vincent 5-0 to move onto the championship day. Sage stands at 23-12 on the season and will play the Rams (22-12) stands at 2-0 on the tournament after beating MSMC on Friday, 4-3 and CMSV, 9-3 on Saturday morning.

The tournament is a double-elimination format with four teams vying for the crown.

Game 3 – CMSV vs. FSC – FSC wins 9-3

Game 4 – Sage vs. MSMC, Sage wins 3-1 (8 innings)

Game 5 – CMSV vs. Sage, Sage wins 5-0

Game 6 – FSC vs. Sage - 11:00 a.m.

Game 7 (If necessary) - 2:00 p.m.

All games will be played at Robison Field on the campus of Sage 

Sage triumphed in the first game of the day, best MSMC 3-1 in eight innings as with one out, sophomore Katie Kovage (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) walked. Freshman Jessica Adams (Nassau, NY/Columbia) connected for a the game-winning hit as she powered a two-run home run, her second of the year to deep left center field to break the 1-1 tie.

Rookie pitcher Lindsay Brace (Moriah, NY/Moriah) worked the complete game and tallied the win to improve 3-0 as she allowed just one unearned run and fanned eight batters.

For MSMC, freshman Shannon Sommer (Brewster, NY/Brewster) was 4-4, while rookie Breanna Depasquale (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) was 2-4 with a double.

Sophomore pitcher Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, NY/Archbishop Molloy) started and worked four innings with one earned run off three hits and fanned four batters. Senior Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) suffered the loss after yielding two earned runs off three hits with two walks and a strikeout as she drops to 6-8.

In the final game of the day, Sage faced the Dolphins of the College of Mt. St. Vincent with both teams facing elimination. The Gators jumped out to 2-0 lead in the top of the first as rookie outfielder Meghan Roullier (Wyanantskill, NY/Columbia) and senior Hillary Faas (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) each singled and were driven in as the Gators made the most of a wild pitch and throwing error. Kovage added an RBI single to left field and Sage led 2-0 after the team's first set of at-bats.

Sage added another run on the top of the third as Kovage had an RBI double and again in the sixth inning. In the sixth inning, senior catcher Tricia Gaulin (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) singled to center field with two outs. A pinch runner, Teagan Waddingham (Coeymans Hollow, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) scored on a wild pitch.

For the game, Faas was 2-3 with two runs scored and a triple, while Kovage was also 2-3 with two RBI's.  Sage's rookie pitcher Erika Daigle (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendohowa) had a no-hitter going until the bottom of the sixth inning. She scattered three hits, while fanning nine batters and collected the win to improve to 9-5. She already holds Sage's single-season strikeout mark as she has a team-best 129 strikeouts this season.

For the Dolphins, junior Kathleen Davis (Beacon, NY/Beacon) started and worked one inning, allowing one earned run off three hits with three strikeouts. She drops to 11-5. Freshman Mackenzie Heizer (Vacaville, CA/Vacaville) worked six innings in relief, yielding two earned runs off five hits with four walks and six strikeouts.
