Gators post wins at home opener, downing SUNY-IT

Troy, NY – The Sage Colleges' softball team hosted the Wildcats of SUNY-IT on Thursday afternoon in the team's 2014 home opener. The host Gators posted a 4-3 win in game one and a 9-1 win in five innings in the night cap. Sage stands at 7-7 overall, riding a three-game win streak. SUNY-IT drops to 2-8 overall.

In the first game, Sage's rookie Kelsey Wood (North Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth) was 1-2 with two RBI's and Sage's sophomore pitcher Katie Kovage (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) added a double, her sixth of the year. Kovage worked the complete game and fanned three batters in collecting the win as she moves to 4-5 on the year.

SUNY-IT's junior pitcher Jessica Patterelli (Canastota, NY/Canastota) took the loss and falls to 1-6. She pulled her team within a run in the top of the seventh inning with a two-run home run.

In the night cap, junior Kristen Beikirch (Brockport, NY/Brockport) added two doubles and was 2-3 with two runs scored. She added her second stolen base of the day, improving to 8-8 on the season. She continues to make a push to take over the top spot in career stolen bases as she has 40, just nine shy of the mark held by Melissa Roy (49).

Sage's senior short stop Hillary Faas (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) added to her active career doubles record as well as she has 39 doubles. She also surpassed the 100 career RBI total on the day as she now has 102 career RBI's and is No. 2, just three shy of tying the mark held by Melissa Roy (105).

Freshman pitcher Erika Daigle (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) worked the complete game in earning the win as she is now 3-2. She fanned seven and allowed just one earned run off one hit.

SUNY-IT's junior Bridget Ashmore (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) took the loss (0-1) after 1.1 innings of work with two earned runs off five hits. She was relieved by Patterelli who worked 2.2 innings with five earned runs and three hits. Sophomore Fallon Reinold (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) also appeared with one earned run off one hit to end the game.

The Gators are back in action on Saturday, March 29 hosting SUNY-Old Westbury in a pair of Skyline Conference games slated for a 1p.m. start. Sage will hold their Support the Troops Day and are asking all fans in attendance to bring gently used or new books that will be donated to our U.S. Troops.
