Gators fall twice on Thursday on Florida trip

Clermont, FL – The Sage Colleges' softball team was in action on Thursday in Florida on day five of the team's spring training trip. The Gators fell to Richard Stockton College (8-2) and then dropped a decision to Alvernia University (4-2). Sage stands at 3-5 on the season.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Kovage (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) connected for a solo home run for the Gators and drove in a run and added a single in her time at the plate. Junior Kristen Beikirch (Brockport, NY/Brockport) had a double and an RBI to pace the offense as well.

Kovage took the loss after 3 2/3 innings of work. She gave up nine hits and allowed five earned runs with two strikeouts. She drops to 2-3 on the year. She was replaced by freshman Lindsay Brace (Moriah, NY/Moriah Central), who worked 3 1/3 innings and gave up two hits with a walk and a strikeout in relief.

Sage jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, but Alvernia answered back in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own. Beikirch added two RBIs and three singles, while senior short stop Hillary Faas (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) had two singles for the Gators. Kovage added a double and a single for Sage as they combined for 10 hits.

For the Gators, freshman pitcher Erika Daigle (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) worked five innings and gave up four hits with four earned runs. She walked one and struck out four. Brace also worked an inning with two strikeouts.

Sage returns to action on Friday on the final day of the team's Spring Training Trip. The Gators will face Oswego State at 1 p.m. and Anna Maria College at 5 p.m.
