Softball team falls twice despite a pair of triples from Kellie Jones.

 

Clermont, FL----The Sage Colleges softball team continues action on Monday on their spring training trip at the  National Training Center. The Gators faced two opponents on Monday as they placed The College of New Jersey and dropped a 9-1 decision in the first contest. The Gators dropped the nightcap to the Eagles of Northwestern College (MN), 11-3.

            The Lions of The College of New Jersey scored first as they added three runs in the top of the third inning, but the Gators answered right back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning as senior short stop Kellie Jones (Troy, NY/Troy) had an RBI triple to drive in freshman Olivia Sullivan (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen).
            TCNJ's senior Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) had a two RBI homerun to lead the Lions, while sophomore left fielder Crystal Lee (Dover, NJ/Morris Knolls) added two RBIs as TCNJ had 13 hits in the game.

            Sage's freshman pitcher Gabriella Skillen (Milford, NY/Milford Central) got the start for the Gators and worked 3.1 innings with three earned runs off nine hits. Skillen was relieved by sophomore Kristen Knights (Chatham, NY/Chatham) who worked 2.2 innings with three unearned runs off four hits. TCNJ's senior Ashley Minervini (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) picked up the complete-game win to improve to 2-0 on the year. She allowed just one earned run off two hits with six strikeouts.

            Jones added her second triple of the day against the Eagles and was 1-3 at the plate. Knights was 1-1 as well for the Gators on offense.

            Sullivan got the nod as the Gators' pitcher and worked four innings, yielding nine earned runs with a strikeout and a walk in the game. Northwestern's freshman Briana Rodgers (Monticello, MN) picked up the win for the Eagles as she allowed just two earned runs off a pair of Gator hits. She had three walks and a pair of strikeouts.  

            The Gators will return to action on Tuesday, March 9 when they face Wisconsin-Lutheran College and Muskingum College at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
