Hailu and Topple Lead RSC at Wells Tri-Match

AURORA, N.Y. –  Russell Sage College senior middle hitter Mikhail Hailu (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) and junior outside hitter Corey Topple (Hudson, NY/Hudson) totaled 31 kills across a pair of non-conference matches at the Wells Tri-Match this afternoon. Hailu registered 17 kills on .250 hitting, while Topple (above) finished off 14 rallies.

The Gators began the day by falling 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-21) to SUNY Potsdam.

Senior middle hitter Andrew Samson (Queens, NY/Pathways), Topple, and Hailu tallied five kills apiece to lead the RSC offense. Topple recorded six digs, while setter Ryan Jennings (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Twp.), a graduate student, registered 15 assists and four digs.  

SUNY Potsdam (7-11) hit .287 as a team in the non-conference sweep. Senior outside hitter Joe Zimmerman led the Bears with 14 kills on .550 hitting.

In the final match of the day, RSC was upended 3-1 (25-15, 24-26, 25-18, 25-16) by the host Express.

Hailu registered 12 kills on .429 hitting to lead the Gators. Topple added nine kills, while Jennings contributed 29 assists and four digs. Jennings became just the second RSC player to surpass 2,000 career assists this afternoon.

Wells (2-11) had three players record double-digit kills in the home non-conference victory.

Junior outside hitter Connor Garvey had 20 on .515 hitting, while freshman outside hitter Riley Mahoney recorded 19 kills. Senior middle hitter Christian Hahn achieved a double-double of 10 kills on .613 hitting and 13 digs.

Looking ahead, RSC (4-15) plays next on Tuesday at SUNY Poly at 7:00 pm.


Notes: Freshman defensive specialist/libero Camden Knight (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) was selected the Men's Volleyball Rookie of the Week by the Empire 8 Conference and the New England Collegiate Conference...He registered 20 digs, 2.86 per set, across two matches last week...Jennings closed the weekend with 2,014 career assists.
