SAGE'S SHANE WENZ SALUTED AS EMPIRE 8 MEN'S VOLLEYBALL CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Hilton, NY–Sage's men's volleyball team member, senior Shane Wenz (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) was selected as the Empire 8 co-men's volleyball player of the week on March 2. The selection is the second of the year for the Gator middle hitter.

Wenz added a .390 attack percentage on the week with 59.0 points and 53 kills in three matches. He averaged 5.3 kills per set with 1.1 digs per set as well.

Against MIT, Wenz broke his own single-match record with his 30 kills, bettering his mark from earlier this season of 27 against SUNY-Polytechnic. Wenz added a .460 attack percentage with a school-single-match of 33.0 points. He added an ace with five digs and three total blocks in the action.  In the same match, the Gators and the Engineers played a 37-35 score in the fourth set. That score in the final set is the highest score for the Gators since the team started in 2010, even when the scoring was based on a 30-point system.

In his other two matches played last week, he had 13 kills with a .414 attack percentage and added five digs with three block assists and 14.5 points as Sage faced Nazareth. Against Rivier, Wenz added 11.5 points and had 10 kills.

On the 2020 season, Wenz leads the Gators in several categories as he has 243 kills, 110 digs, 273.5 points and is averaging 3/92 kills per set.

As the Gators continue to move deeper into the 2020 season, several team members are continuing their climb in the program's career record book. Wenz is currently fifth in career kills with 643 and is also fifth in points with 824.0. He is third in solo blocks (54), third in block assists (152) and third in total blocks (206), while also now ranking 10th with his 324 digs.

Sage will be in action on March 6 and 7 travelling to Keuka College to compete in their Tournament. On Friday, Sage will face Hiram College at 6 p.m. and on March 7 Sage takes on Randolph Macon at noon and the host Keuka at 2 p.m.
