Adrian spoils Sage men's volleyball home opener

Albany, NY–Sage's men's volleyball team hosted the Bulldogs of Adrian College in the team's 2020 home opener in Kahl Gym. The match marked the return of Sage men's volleyball alumni, Casey Fitzpatrick to the gym, but this time as the head coach of the Gators' opponent. Adrian posted the 3-0 win (26-24, 25-18, 25-18) to improve to 7-2, while the loss puts Sage at 0-5.

Adrian got a match-high 20 kills from senior outside hitter Noah Marcinkowski (Menifee, CA/Heritage) while he also boasted an impressive .457 attack percentage and 21 points. Sophomore outside Tedrick Gula (San Gabriel, CA/Gabrielino) added seven kills with seven digs, three aces and two block assists for the Bulldogs. Senior setter Joseph Campana (Los Angeles, CA/Cathedral) had 31 setting assists with six digs, three kills and a block assist to lead the team. Senior outside Kevin Curley (Zion, IL/Zion-Benton Township) racked up eight digs with two aces in the contest.

Sage's senior Jarod Martel (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) picked up a team-best 10 kills with a .261 attack percentage and 12.0 points. He also had four digs with an ace and a solo block for the Gators. Senior middle hitter Shane Wenz (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) collected nine kills with three digs and 9.0 points in the contest. Sage's senior middle hitter Scott Sanders (Los Angeles, CA/Taft) picked up six kills with a .385 attack percentage with two digs, and four total blocks in the match. 

Junior setter Ryan Jennings (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Township) added 26 setting assists with two digs, and a block assist and four kills.

As the 2020 season continues, so does the assault on the program's record book. After Thursday action, Wenz is now seventh in career kills with 442, while also standing third in solo blocks (46), third in block assists (130) and third in total blocks (176) and also seventh in points (596.0). Jennings ranks third with his 1,221 career setting assists second to Adrian's Head Coach Casey Fitzpatrick who collected 1,401 setting assists while playing for Sage from 2015-2018.

Sage will host Medaille College in a 7 p.m. contest in Kahl Gym on January 24, while Adrian travels to SUNY-IT on Friday, January 24 to compete in the Wildcat Invitational.
