Engineers Top Gators in UVC Opener, 3-0

Cambridge, MA— The Sage Colleges' men's volleyball team travelled to Massachusetts  on Saturday afternoon to take on the Engineers of MIT in the Gators' first United Volleyball Conference match of the season. MIT posted the 3-0 win over Sage, 25-15, 26-24, 25-23 and improves to 7-2 overall and 1-2 in the UVC. Sage falls to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in the UVC.

Junior middle hitter Scott Sanders (Los Angeles, CA/Taft) racked up eight kills with a .300 attack percentage in the action, while adding 10.5 points and a solo block with three block assists.

Senior co-captain Zackery Karl (West Monroe, NY/Central Square) also contributed five kills with four digs and a block assist and had just one receiving error in 18 attempts for a .947 receiving percentage.  Sophomore co-captain Mike Basile (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) picked up four kills with seven digs and made just one reception error on his 21 attempts for a .955 receiving percentage.

Sage's junior outside hitter Shane Wenz (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) connected for an ace with two digs, no receiving errors on nine attempts (1.000) with three kills in the contest.

Sophomore setter Ryan Jennings (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Township) handed out 16 setting assists with two kills and a pair of block assists. Junior Jarod Martel (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) had four digs with a kill and three block assists for the Gators.

Sage is back in action on Thursday, February 21 at Vassar for a 6 p.m. UVC match.
