Sage's four seniors collect a sweep to cap Senior Day in style

Albany, NY-  The Sage Colleges' men's volleyball team hosted Lehman College and New Jersey City University on Saturday in a non-conference tri-match. The Gators took a 3-0 win over Lehman College (25-12, 25-15, 25-19) and then posted a 3-0 win over the Gothic Knights (25-16, 25-16, 25-11). Sage wraps the 2018 season with a 13-14 record.

Against Lehman, Sage was paced by the performance of sophomore Jarod Martel (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) as he led the Gators with his eight kills, while sophomore middle hitter Shane Wenz (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) added seven kills. Sage combined for a .361 attack percentage in the action.

Sophomore Scott Sanders (Los Angelos, CA/Taft) added six kills and hit .857 in the match with two aces and four block assists.  Junior opposite Zackery Karl (West Monroe, NY/Central Square) also had five kills with a .571 attack percentage and an ace.

Senior outside hitter Ryan Guyton (Lockport, NY/Lockport) collected five kills with a pair of aces, six digs and a solo block.  Senior outside hitter Bailey Cecchi (Agawam, MA/Agawam) added for kills with five digs, an ace and was a perfect 8-0 on reception attempts.

Senior libero Casey Fitzpatrick (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill) picked up 11 digs with three setting assists, while junior Austin Laverty (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) posted 18 setting assists with seven digs as well as one kill and one ace in match. 

Against NJCU, Guyton led the Sage squad with his 16 kills, .800 attack percentage, two aces with 19.0 points, while Cecchi picked up 13 kills with a .476 attack percentage and had six digs with three aces.

Sanders was next for the Gators with his impressive six kills and a .556 attack percentage with two digs and six total blocks, including five block assists.

Laverty added 19 setting assists with two digs and three block assists. Rookie Ryan Jennings (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) connected for 15 setting assists with two digs. Fitzpatrick added 10 digs with two setting assists and was a perfect 7-0 on reception attempts.

The Gators honored their four seniors on Saturday, Ryan Guyton, Bailey Cecchi, Casey Fitzpatrick, and Melvin Tejada (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central). The most decorated foursome in program history garnered more honors and set more program high-water marks than any previous class.

Guyton holds Sage's career records for most points (1,409.0), most kills (1,117), most aces (197), while playing in a record 119 matches, an honor he shares with Fitzpatrick and Cecchi. Cecchi was right behind Guyton in the Sage men's volleyball record book with his 1,106 kills, 116 aces, 1,300.5 points, all good enough for the second most in the career standards. Cecchi added 603 career digs, which is fourth, while Guyton added 527 digs, good enough for seventh. Fitzpatrick holds Sage's career digs mark, which now stands at 884, while ranking second in setting assists with 1,401 and played in 388 career sets, also No. 2 for the Gators. Tejada added a .935 career service percentage in 277 career serves and ranks eighth all-time, while adding 350 career digs (ninth).

On the 2018 season, Guyton led the team with his 331.5 points and 273 kills, while Cecchi was next with 255 kills and 299.5 points. Guyton was also first with his 43 aces, while Sanders led the Gators with his 68 total blocks, while picking up 185 kills in his first season at Sage. Jennings was the leader with his 490 setting assists, while Laverty was right behind him with 415 setting assists. Fitzpatrick added a team-best 267 digs while earning a .924 reception percentage on the season.
